  • 1 × Lower Gearcase Seal Kit

Note: The package contains all the seals and O-rings shown in the product image.

Installation Guide

  1. Disconnect the lower unit from the outboard motor and drain all gearcase oil. Clean the exterior thoroughly to prevent contamination during disassembly.
  2. Remove the propeller, shear pin, and any external hardware securing the lower unit housing. Mark the orientation of mating surfaces for reassembly.
  3. Carefully disassemble the gearcase, noting the position of shims and thrust washers. Inspect all internal components for wear or damage.
  4. Remove all old seals and O-rings from the gearcase housing using appropriate seal removal tools. Clean all sealing surfaces with solvent and inspect for scoring or corrosion.
  5. Lubricate new seals and O-rings with marine-grade grease before installation. Install each seal square to its bore, ensuring proper orientation and seating depth.
  6. Reassemble the gearcase components in reverse order, replacing shims and washers in their original positions. Torque all fasteners to manufacturer specifications.
  7. Refill the gearcase with the correct type and quantity of gear oil through the lower fill plug. Monitor for air bubbles and ensure oil reaches the upper vent hole.
  8. Reinstall the lower unit onto the outboard motor, aligning the driveshaft and water tube carefully. Secure all mounting hardware and torque to specification.
  9. Run the engine in a test tank or on the water, checking for leaks around all seal points. Monitor gearcase temperature and shift operation for proper function.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Q: How do I confirm this seal kit fits my specific Johnson or Evinrude engine?
A: Check the compatibility table above for your engine's HP rating, stroke type, and year range. Cross-reference your current part number (396350, 0396350, 18-2656, or 26-00077) to ensure proper fitment before ordering.

Q: How often should I replace the lower unit seals?
A: Replace lower unit seals during gearcase rebuilds or whenever you notice gear oil leaking, milky oil (indicating water intrusion), or during routine maintenance every 3–5 years depending on usage and operating conditions.

Q: What are the signs that my lower unit seals are failing?
A: Common symptoms include visible gear oil leaks around the lower unit, milky or contaminated gear oil, difficulty shifting gears, unusual noise from the gearcase, or overheating during operation.

Q: Can I reuse the old seals if they look okay?
A: No, always replace all seals and O-rings during gearcase service. Even if they appear intact, seals lose elasticity over time and may fail shortly after reassembly, leading to costly water damage or gear failure.

Q: What's the difference between this kit and the OEM Johnson/Evinrude kit?
A: This is an aftermarket replacement part built to OEM specifications using comparable materials. It provides the same seal function and fitment as the original OMC kit at a more competitive price point.

Q: Is this an OEM or aftermarket part?
A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.

Q: How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
A: We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.

Q: What is your warranty and return policy?
A: This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.

This will work but prep is key!
I have an older RV that the gelcoat has dulled and is oxidized, but otherwise in good shape. I have buffed and polished in the past only for it to last a short time. I was looking up different products to try and this one has such good reviews, I thought I would give it a try. I bought the kit with the Poliglow and the Poliprep, with the scrubber and the microfiber glove. I started with the poliprep and it did a great job of gettting the streaks and black marks off. You spend a lot of time scrubbing to your likeness because anything that is still on the gelcoat when you apply the poliglow, it will be locked in there. The Poliglow is like a clearcoat that goes over the gelcoat. You have to build up layers and here are some of the tips and tricks I figured out that really helped my finished RV look great. First, make sure the applicator stays damp, this keeps the poliglow more uniform across the glove. Also, stick it in a zip lock bag when not using, you do not want it to dry out while you are using it. I found out that applying this in direct sunlight in warm temps, is the best method. This allows the poliglow to dry really fast. The first 3 or 4 layers will look streaky and dull but this is ok and as you build up the layers, the shine will come back. I found if you do this when its cooler, the layers do not dry as quick and you will get some permanent streaking or running. I had to remove a section I did in the evening because I noticed this. When in direct sunlight, this gave me the best results with no streaking or running. It dries fast and you can keep working. Like it says, do not do big sections at a time, keep it to small what you can reach sections and build those up and move on. As far as how much to buy? I have a 40 ft toy hauler and I got to kits and I had just enough to finish the whole thing minus the nose cap. I have Durabak on the nose cap, so I dont need to worry about that. I ended up buying one more bottle of the poliglow to have for my maintenance coats. Overall, I am pleased with how my 10 year old RV looks and other than some of the decals show age, it looks new again. If I were to buy a new RV, I would put this on right away and preserve the whole RV including the decals. Its not too expensive and its a lot of work, especially the prep, but it does end up with great results.

Excellent shine
Excellent line of products. Looking at the picture, you can see what the camper looked like before the Poli Glow. To the left of the window is the after Poli Glow. It takes some elbow grease (follow instructions well) but well worth it.

One bottle covered my 20ft camping trailer 4 coats and with a little remaining for future touch ups. It definitely increases the gloss. I'm glad I didn't waste my time with wax. This is like an easy wipe on clear coat. I will report back in the future for longevity.

poli glow shine
its works great .when applying more coats the shinier it gets i used on several old boats because the florida sun bakes the jell coat right off and no wax made can withstand salty seas , so why not ,, when you apply use the mit and don't gob it on .. nice and easy and recoat in five minutes when you get to about five coats you will be amazed.looks like new .. just a tip also after about a year or so and you want to re apply,, go to your local hardware store and get a gallon of high strength or non diluted floor stripper and put in spray bottle and use to remove old poli-glow also great for cleaning stubborn stains [ i use full strength ] just spray on and brush with a scrub brush and rinse ..and let dry and re apply ,, its also works on car faded bumpers ,, also never use harsh cleaners it will cause streaking the best thing i have found for cleaning the boat after poli glow was put on is car wash from auto store with wax or not it seems not to hurt the shine . it reminds me of mop an glow,,.
