De levensgevaarlijke reis die volgde duurde zeven jaar en stelde hem en zijn strijders fysiek en mentaal zwaar op de proef: moessons, extreme temparturen, natuurlijke hindernissen en veel lastige en listige vijanden moesten getrotseerd worden. Ook muiterij dreigde voortdurend, want zijn soldaten stelden zelfs de overtuigingen ter discussie waarop Alexander zijn wereldrijk had gebouwd. Hij overleed na deze extreem spannende én inspannende periode op tweeëndertigjarige leeftijd – voor altijd een legende.
