Introduction

Between c1790 and c1850 the flute enjoyed exceptional popularity. There were hundreds of flute methods published and innumerable works composed for the many different flutes used at the time. Today it is difficult to find source material from this period in order to help establish a concept of performance practice and sound of the period. Here I have selected material (original language) from flute methods and other texts directly pertaining to performance of repertoire of the time.

A PDF version of my portfolio “The simple system flute between 1790 and 1850: its performance practice and chamber music repertoire with fortepiano and / or strings”, part of my doctoral thesis from November 2016, can now be downloaded here: Portfolio Anne Pustlauk. Visit also the link “the simple system flute” for more sources on performance practice, fingering charts and the chamber music catalogue.
